1965 COBRA S/C MK111 BY SUPERFORMANCE

IN MY OPINION ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AND KNOWN  CAR TEST WAS THE ACCELERATION TEST DONE BY KEN MILES IN A 427 COBRA ON SKINNEY GOODYEAR BLUE DOT TIRES,  THAT WERE VERY HARD COMPOUND COMPARED TO TODAY’S STICKY TIRES.  THIS TEST WAS DONE ALSO ON CONCRETE.... NOT THE IDEAL SURFACE FOR TRACTION.   THE COBRA USED WAS JUST A STREET CAR WITH NO SPECIAL PREP OR TUNING NOT EVEN ONE OF THE COMP CARS OR S/C’S. WHAT BROUGHT THIS ON WAS MILES WAS THINKING OF THE TEST DONE BY ASTON MARTIN IN EUROPE WHERE IT WAS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY TO ACCELERATE QUICKLY BUT ALSO TO STOP QUICKLY. THIS WAY OF TESTING CARS BECAME THE BENCHMARK ON HOW SPORTS CARS WERE TESTED IN EUROPE.  THE TIME THAT WAS SET BY ASTON WAS LESS THAN 30 SECONDS. WOW!! AT THE TIME THAT WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE. THAT IS WHAT INSPIRED MILES TO DO THIS NOW INCREDIBLY FAMOUS TEST ON THIS STREET COBRA.

MILES WENT FROM A STANDING START TO 100 MPH AND TO A STOP IN 13.2 SECONDS. THIS ABSOLUTELY  BLEW EVERYONES MIND. MOST CARS IN THE SIXTIES WOULD NOT EVEN REACH 100MPH IN 13 SECOND BESIDES STOPPING.  JUST IMAGINE HOW FAST THAT COBRA COULD DO THAT ON THE FAT STICKY TIRES WE HAVE NOW!!  THIS TEST WAS WITNESSED BY NONE OTHER THAN JERRY TITUS THE EDITOR OF SPORTS CAR GRAPHIC MAGAZINE. HE OF COURSE, LATER BECAME VERY WELL KNOWN THROUGH HIS DRIVING SKILL IN THE 65 GT350’S.

THE 427 COBRA CAME ABOUT BECAUSE SHELBY REALIZED THAT HE NEEDED AN UPDATED RACE CAR TO RACE AGAINST THE FERRARI’S SO HE COULD WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP THAT HE BARELY LOST ON A TECHNICALITY EXERCISED BY FERRARI AGAINST HIS 289 COBRA’S.  KEN MILES IS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE 427 COBRA EXISTANCE.  MILES KNEW OF THE FORD NASCAR 427 ENGINE AND TALKED SHELBY INTO LETTING HIM SHOE HORN THE ENGINE IN THE SAME PLACE THAT THE MUCH SMALLER 289 ENGINE SAT. BOB BONDURANT AND MILES TEST DROVE THE PROTOTYPE 427 AT RIVERSIDE.  ALL THEY HAD AT THE TIME FOR WHEELS WERE THE 289 WIRE WHEELS SO THEY HAD TO BE VERY CAREFULL AND NOT DRIVE THE CAR AS HARD AS IT WOULD GO BECAUSE THEY KNEW THAT THE WIRE SPOKES WOULD BE RIPPED FROM THE WHEELS. THE COBRA WAS SAID TO “RUN LIKE THE HAMMERS OF HELL” WHICH I GUESS WAS PRETTY FAST.  IT DID RECEIVE A NICKNAME THAT WAS NOT VERY NICE BECAUSE AS IT DID GO EXTREMELY FAST IT HANDLED HORRIBLY.  HENCE CAME IT’S NICK NAME FROM THE MECHANICS AS THE “TURD”

AS A RESULT OF ALL THIS WORK DONE BY SHELBY AMERICAN ON DEVELOPING THE 427 TO A USEABLE STREET CAR IT BECAME ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND COVERTED CARS MADE IN THE WORLD.  BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED NUMBER OF 427 COBRA’S MADE (260 STREET CARS AND ONLY 31 S/C’S) PEOPLE STARTED TO REPLICATE THEM AS OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH OF THEM TO GO AROUND PLUS THE FACT THAT THESE 427 COBRA’S ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE 1 MILLION DOLLAR PRICE TAG IF YOU CAN FIND ONE FOR SALE.

THROUGH MY 900 YEARS OF BEING IN THE SPECIALITY CAR BUSINESS I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS 289 AND 427 COBRA’S AND AT ONE TIME OWNED THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL THE DAYTONA COUPES SERIAL # 2601.  IT IS USUALLY CALLED THE BOB BONDURANT CAR AS BONDURANT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH IT ON JULY 4, 1965 AT REIMS FRANCE. I HAVE ALSO OWNED NUMEROUS REPLICA OR TRIBUTE COBRA’S. WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT THEY WERE ABSOLUTELY SCARY TO DRIVE.  MY SHOP WOULD NORMALLY SPEND ABOUT 5000 ON ONE OF THESE CARS JUST TO GET IT TO BEHAVE NICELY. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I DROVE A SUPERFORMANCE COBRA AND HOW IMPRESSED I WAS WITH IT AND HOW NICE AND TIGHT THE CAR WAS TO DRIVE. THE ORIGINAL CARS WERE NOT AS NICE AS THESE CARS ARE BELIEVE ME.   

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS PARTICULAR CAR.  IT IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING AND WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU IN PERSON EITHER. THE COLOR IS CALLED ROYAL BLUE AND AS YOU CAN SEE IT HIGH-LIGHTS THE FANTASTIC LINES OF THE CAR.   THIS CAR IS OUTFITTED LIKE A 427 S/C COBRA OF THE SIXTIES.  IT EVEN HAS THE CORRECT SMITH GUAGES AND THE LEATHER PULL FOR THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE, THE COMP SEAT BELTS, SIDE EXIT EXHAUST(BECAREFULL ON THOSE)  I HAVE BEEN BRANDED NUMEROUS TIMES ON THOSE OVER THE YEARS. CHECK OUT THAT SHIFT HANDLE THAT WAS A FACTORY FORD SHIFTER THAT SHELBY TURNED AROUND BACKWARDS SO IT WOULD WORK IN A 427.

THE HEART OF THE BEAST IS A 351  STROKED TO 392CU. INCHES PUTTING OUT 439 HP ON THE DYNO. LET ME TELL YOU THAT IS ENOUGH FOR THIS CAR. FORD ADVERTISED 425HP OUT OF THEIR 427 IN THE SIXTIES. THE GEAR CHANGE IS ACCOMBLISHED THROUGH A 5-SPEED TREMEC TKO AND IN 5TH GEAR YOU CAN DO SOME NICE CRUISIN AND IT IS EQUIPPED WITH A HEAVY DUTY CLUTCH BUT NOT ONE OF THOSE WHERE YOUR LEG STARTS TO SHAKE AT A STOP LIGHT.

LET ME REITERATE HOW NICE AND HOW TIGHT THIS CAR IS AND ALSO HOW WELL IT RUNS. AS I HAVE SAID IT IS MUCH NICER TO DRIVE THAN ONE OF THE ORIGINAL CARS .
